- Dividend payments up by 15.7% at £19.7bn in Q1
Link Asset Services data has revealed that dividend payments hit a record high in the first quarter of 2019, and it looks increasingly likely that the total for the year will reach £100bn.
Since the global financial crisis in 2009 regular dividends have increased every year. The total paid to shareholders in dividends since the crisis up to 2018 grew by 85%.
The boost in dividends in Q1 of 2019 have been driven by large payouts by BP, Vodafone, the pharma group AstraZeneca, Royal Dutch Shell (largest at £2.9bn), British American Tobacco and a special dividend of £2.6bn from the Anglo-Australian mining company BHP.
