  2. Finding information about penny stocks can be a challenge, but thanks to the internet there are plenty of sites you can use for research. You will find there are companies that have little information publically available, and in those cases it’s best to just move on to another stock. If you can’t find information, especially financial information, about a company it isn’t worth investing in. One of the best places to learn about penny stocks is your broker. Several of the large brokers have in-house analysts who can do the legwork for you by tracking down details of penny stocks and condensing them into an easy to digest report. This only applies to a few penny stocks, but it’s worth looking into. Another excellent source of information can be the website of the company you’re researching. You should be able to find financial statements, some marketing content, and details of the product or service being sold by the company. Another useful website for research is Finviz.com. You can find news, company information and run scans for the entire universe of stocks. To home in on penny stock news and analysis there’s also the Pennystocks.news site. For general information regarding trading penny stocks, Timothy Sykes is a popular personality that has been trading for over 20 years and is now training his own group of students. He is probably the best-known penny stock trader with documented success.
  6. It makes sense to segment your stock trading into sectors or industries and the same is true for penny stock trading. So, which penny stock industries make profits? Technology remains one area that sees many new companies emerging each year, making it a fertile ground for penny stocks. Traders will have many choices within the tech sector, and these change each month, giving you plenty of new profit opportunities. One thing to look for within this industry is companies that can capture market share. Another hot topic at the beginning of 2019 is the marijuana industry. The combination of legalization in Canada and the number of U.S. states who are voting to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana has been a boon for the industry. Because the entire industry is so new, nearly all the stocks are penny stocks, although some have already gained strong positions. If you intend to speculate on other industries, mining is always a good sector to investigate in penny stocks. With commodity prices on the rise, many of these mining companies are ready to post substantial gains in their profits, and this is always a good catalyst for penny stocks. Be careful and do your research in this industry group as it can be volatile. The problem some investors have with penny stocks is that it’s necessary to make so many guesses about the future. There are few penny stocks with a solid track record that show prosperity and success. That said, the industries listed above give great opportunities for those willing to do the research.
  7. Gambling is placing a bet on an outcome based on a probability. With some forms of gambling you have little or no control. Some types of gambling give you even odds of winning or losing, or even worse odds of winning than losing. Trading in stocks is more complex, with many factors involved, some of which are under your control. The randomness and risk of trading is also more controlled than with gambling, and when done correctly you should always have a better than 50% chance of winning. Gambling instincts are stronger in some than in others. Most of us won’t admit to having gambling tendencies, but they are there and can show themselves in trading. This is one reason people often equate trading penny stocks with gambling. Actually, the two are quite different, but emotionally we can perceive them to be the same. Because there are so many variables when trading stocks it can seem random even though it isn’t. New traders with little knowledge often trade blindly, and their trading can seem like gambling. Once they become more knowledgeable and experienced, their trading takes on more structure and is less random and bound to probabilities. Trading penny stocks can also seem like gambling when an individual trades for the excitement it generates. They can make their trading more like gambling because they are more concerned with generating excitement than with winning their trades. In Conclusion The tendency to gamble lies within all of us and can present itself in our trading when we are inexperienced, unknowledgeable, or seeking excitement. That doesn’t mean trading penny stocks is like gambling, it means we exercise our gambling tendencies in the market. We could do the same with larger stocks, with forex, with commodities, or with any investment. Trading penny stocks differs from gambling because it is based on research, logic and stable decision-making. Gambling is based on the emotional high that comes from winning and losing. While trading penny stocks can take on that emotional undertone, it shouldn’t, and when conducted properly trading any stocks is not gambling.
  8. Investors are always looking for stocks with solid earnings since it shows the company is making good business decisions and increasing value for the investors. That’s why it is confusing when a company reports good earnings, but the stock price falls. Why does that happen? Buy the Rumor, Sell the News Buy the rumor, sell the news is an old saying in the financial markets. It means that often the value of a good earnings report is priced into the stock ahead of publication. Investors buy the stock ahead of the earnings result with expectations that the company will report better than expected profits. Once the news is out such investors decide it’s time to take their profits and the stock price falls. Company Guidance Just because a company beats its profit forecast in one quarter it doesn’t mean the business is doing great. That’s an error of judgment many beginning traders make. There are many cases where a company does well on earnings while also lowering their future guidance. This lowered future guidance scares investors, who will always fear the worst. In this case the investors often sell the stock to lock in their profits while the picture is bright, figuring the good times are over. Hedge Fund Activity Hedge funds often hold large positions they cannot unwind without impacting the share price. During earnings announcements the volume in a stock often explodes, and this gives hedge funds the opening they need to sell a large block of shares without significantly impacting the price. If the earnings were better than expected there are often plenty of buyers to keep prices high and that helps the hedge funds unwind their positions. Panic Selling This can occur when one of the three scenarios above is playing out. As investors take profits and a share price slides lower, there is a sense of fear and then panic. This leads to more selling, which sends the price rapidly lower. This is an example of how traders often make decisions based on their emotions. It doesn’t matter if the fundamental reason for buying the stock is still sound if the sight of your money disappearing puts a knot in your stomach.
  9. There’s a simple reason why penny stocks attract so many investors; they are inexpensive and give traders hopes for huge profits. Many of those drawn to penny stocks end up losing money, so there are rules to follow when venturing into them. Here are 10 such rules. Ignore the success stories about penny stocks – Many of the stories you read are nothing more than hype meant to drive the price of the stock higher. Always ignore the stories. Read any disclaimers and ignore tips– All the free penny stock newsletters will have disclaimers in small print at the bottom of each email you receive. Read them and you’ll often find that the newsletter is being paid to promote that “great” penny stock. It’s best to do your own research and ignore newsletter tips. Sell quickly– A benefit of penny stocks is the possibility of quick profits. Unfortunately, some traders get too greedy. If you get a 40% return in a week, take it. Don’t watch it disappear because you want 400%. Pay no attention to company management– Many penny stocks are scams meant to enrich those running the company. Don’t listen to management because often they’ll say anything to help lift the stock price. No short selling– While it might seem attractive, shorting penny stocks is just too dangerous. With limited liquidity you could get caught in a short squeeze and lose 50% overnight. Leave short selling to the pros. Only trade penny stocks with high volume– Focus on the penny stocks that trade at least 100,000 shares per day. Less than that and you’re flirting with a lack of liquidity that could leave you holding stocks you’re unable to sell. Mental stops are better than hard stops– While it’s normally best to use hard stops you can set and forget, in the world of penny stocks, where bid/ask spreads can be as much as 10%, it’s better to use mental stops. Just be sure to stick to them. Buy only the best– Look for stocks making 52-week highs or those with big upside earnings surprises. Keep positions modest– Never trade over 10% of a stock’s daily volume or you risk getting stuck in the stock and potentially losing a lot. Never fall in love with a stock– Every penny stock company wants you to think they have a revolutionary idea that just hasn’t been recognized yet. Be careful and do your research!
  11. Each country of the world has its own currency, and while all of them have a place in the forex market, there are a few actively traded with good liquidity. The in-demand currencies regularly traded are those of the countries that are most economically vibrant and politically stable. Unsurprisingly, the U.S. dollar is by far the most actively traded currency in forex, with some estimates indicating 88% of all forex trades involve the U.S. dollar. Besides the U.S. dollar (USD) there are seven other major currencies that are the most traded. These are the Euro (EUR), British Pound (GBP), Japanese Yen (JPY), Canadian Dollar (CAD), Australian Dollar (AUD), New Zealand Dollar (NZD) and the Swiss Franc (CHF). The most traded currency pairs in forex Currencies are traded in pairs and with the eight most traded currencies above there is a possibility of creating 27 different currency pairs. Only seven of the pairs qualify as widely traded with large amounts of liquidity. We call the largest four the major pairs and these are the EUR/USD, the USD/JPY, the GBP/USD, and the USD/CHF. Besides these four major pairs there are three less popular pairs, sometimes called the commodity pairs because of the strong connection to commodities from one of the base currencies. These commodity pairs are the AUD/USD, the USD/CAD and the NZD/USD. These seven pairs account for most of the speculative trading in forex markets, although some other combinations (EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, EUR/GBP) also see decent volume. Based on data from the Bank for International Settlements the USD is the dominant currency and was a part of 88% of all trades in April 2016. With nearly all the trading volume in the forex markets concentrated in 18 pairs it is far less broad than the stock market. That makes forex trading more manageable due to the limited number of choices as compared to the thousands of choices available to equity traders.
  14. Day traders have different requirements of their brokers when compared with less active investors. A day trader wants low cost, reliability, and fast order execution. Many of the features offered to appeal to longterm and infrequent traders are irrelevant for day traders. Remember that day traders close out all their positions at the end of a trading day and begin each trading day with a clean slate. They also make many transactions, so they have different criteria when deciding on the best brokers. Day traders typically aren’t concerned with fundamental data since they often place their trades from a chart based on technical analysis. What is important is the ability to receive breaking news while monitoring trading volumes, price activity and market liquidity. In deciding which brokers are best for day trading we focused on brokers that make it easy to enter different trade types and sizes quickly. We also wanted brokers that allow customers to place multiple, simultaneous orders, have customizable trade platforms, and will allow clients to designate their preferred trading venue. Interactive Brokers Interactive Brokers has long been the leader in low-cost trading. They prioritize low fees and focus on the active trader. Their Trader Workstation platform comes with dozens of trading algorithms, including one which finds the best price when filling orders. Day traders know IB has the lowest margin rates around, especially for traders using more than $100,000 in margin. And IB offers “unbundled” rates where customers receive 100% of market rebates for adding or taking market liquidity. TradeStation TradeStation began as a charting service, transitioned into a broker in 2001, and is now a top choice for active investors of stocks, options and futures. TradeStation provides clients with the best analytical tools, piles of research, and one of the best trading platforms in the industry. Clients can choose from three different commission plans: a flat fee plan, a per share/contract plan, and an unbundled plan. Active day traders will especially like the unbundled plan. One of the favorite features of the TradeStation platform is the ability to create and backtest an automated trading strategy from technical triggers.
  15. When you’re starting day trading, it’s natural to gravitate towards stocks. Most people easily understand them, and news coverage is extensive, so you’ve likely heard of many of the indices and stocks that make good candidates for day traders. There are other assets to consider in your day trading career though. Both forex and commodities can be suitable asset classes for day trading. You should consider the importance of market resources, liquidity and volatility before making a choice. It’s a good idea to focus in on the right asset class for you at the beginning of your trading career. While you might want to try several assets, always trade just one asset at a time as a beginner. Making a profit as a day trader is never easy, so don’t make it harder by trading the wrong asset class. Each market has different characteristics, qualities and structure. This means the asset and market you choose should match your market knowledge, risk appetite, financial resources and temperament. Consider these factors when deciding which asset class is best for day trading in your case: Volatility: This is one of the primary considerations. Volatility can bring you more profits, but it also increases the risk you take with each trade. Volatility is a measurement of how much and how quickly prices fluctuate. Stocks are the least volatile asset class, followed by currencies, and many of the commodities are the most volatile assets. Liquidity: This is how many people participate in the market and it determines how easy it is to buy and sell an asset without moving the price. The forex market has the greatest liquidity, and most well-known stocks also have good liquidity. Commodities can see varying levels of liquidity. Market Resources: These are things like news sources and outside analysis. If you will trade an asset, you’ll need a source of information about that market, from price and volume data to news sources and professional analysis. Stocks are the best asset class for day trading for those just starting out and for those with lower tolerance of risk. Forex has great liquidity but is more difficult for new traders to gauge market sentiment. Commodities will give you the most volatility, but many traders can’t handle the stress caused by this volatility.
  18. The forex markets are unique among financial markets because they remain open 24 hours a day 5 ½ days a week. Forex trading occurs from 17:00 EST on Sunday through 16:00 EST on Friday regardless of holidays or any other typical market interruptions. The global nature of the forex markets ensures that trade is always taking place, and that there is always liquidity for the currencies in high demand such as the U.S. dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen and British Pound. We can further divide this 24-hour trading session into four smaller major trading sessions: The Sydney session; The Tokyo session; The London session; The New York session. One thing of note is that each of these sessions overlaps with another, so there are usually two sessions taking place simultaneously. For example, during the summer months when daylight savings is in effect there is an overlap of one hour between 3:00 and 4:00 EST for the Tokyo and London sessions. This can spike volatility or any ongoing trend for the GBP/JPY. There is also a four-hour overlap between the London session and the New York session. This overlap is between 8:00 and 12:00 EST and occurs all year long. This is also the best time to trade since the most forex activity occurs in London and New York, so having them both open and trading at the same time dramatically increases market activity. If you can only trade for a few hours a day these are the best trading hours.
  19. Paper trading is the name given to trading simulations where investors can practice trading assets risking no real money. The name paper trading came about because it used to be commonplace for traders to write their trades on paper and then compare the actual results later. With the advent of computers and software applications, few traders use paper any longer. Instead, there are trading simulators used, which look and feel like actual markets. Benefits of Paper Trading Paper trading is easy these days because nearly every online trading platform has paper trading capabilities. Online brokers offer paper trading accounts for stocks, forex and commodities. One of the greatest benefits for traders is they can use paper trading to test a new trading strategy before using it in a real money account. To get the most from paper trading the investor should use the same parameters, risk profile, trade horizon and constraints as they would have when trading with real money. For example, it makes no sense for an investor who is mostly concerned with income-generating stocks to paper trade like a day trader and makes short-term, high-risk trades. Paper Trading vs. Live Trading One downside to paper trading is that it can give new traders the impression that trading is easy. Paper trading can give a skewed sense of security as it can often provide returns distorted by back testing. Another reason paper trading can give different results from real trading is because there is no real risk involved. This results in a false sense of security for the new trader who often behaves differently when real money is on the line. Paper trading rarely creates emotions such as fear and greed, which can color a trader’s judgment when trading with real money in a live account. These emotions can lead to traders doubling down to try to recoup losses or holding a trade too long in hopes of greater profits, only to watch the profits they initially had evaporate. Traders need to be careful of the psychological implications of paper trading vs. live trading.
  20. One of the questions new investors have when buying a dividend bearing stock is when they get to collect the dividend. The answer is more involved than the company just handing out cash the day they declare a dividend and requires an understanding of the term “ex-dividend.” The ex-dividend date is a date that is two days before the date of record, which is the day on which they pay the dividend. The term ex-dividend means the stock now trades without its dividend. That means anyone who buys the stock on or after the ex-dividend date is not entitled to receive the dividend. It’s only those who own the stock before the ex-dividend date who are entitled to receive the declared dividend. People who learn about the ex-dividend date for the first time almost always think it would be smart to buy the stock before the ex-dividend date, collect the dividend, and then sell the stock again and get to keep the dividend as free money. While this sounds great in theory the reality is the market adjusts the price of stocks downward ahead of the ex-dividend date to account for the upcoming dividend payment. The Importance of the Ex-Dividend Date While the record date is when the dividend is paid, investors who are expecting to collect a dividend need to purchase the stock at least two days before the record date. This is because stock sales take two days to settle. With the ex-dividend date set for two days before the record date it is important for investors to know when a stock is scheduled to go ex-dividend. It’s also necessary to understand that the price of a stock will almost always fall to compensate for the upcoming dividend, so buying before the ex-dividend date will rarely result in an immediate profit. Those who buy on or after the ex-dividend date get a discount on the stock to make up for the dividend they aren’t receiving. It’s not always easy to see these movements when dividends are small, but with larger dividends the movement is usually easy to observe.
  21. The overall stock market is divided into sectors - key areas of the economy. At the time this is being written there are 11 sectors in the U.S., with each sector containing the major stocks that share the same broad focus. Investors often look to implement a strategy that considers sector rotations, which is how sectors come in and go out of favor based on the phase of an economy. Below are the 11 U.S. stock sectors and a brief explanation of each. Consumer Discretionary This sector consists of companies which sell products that consumers buy when they have disposable income. It includes apparel manufacturers, media and entertainment companies, retailers and others that benefit from increased consumer spending during an improving economy. Consumer Staples The consumer staples companies sell items that are always in demand from consumers, even during tough economic times. This includes personal care products, some pharmaceuticals, and basic food and beverage companies. Energy Energy sector stocks are those companies involved in the oil and gas business (exploration or refining) and integrated power companies. Financials The financial sector includes banks, insurance companies, real estate firms and other companies tied to finance and money. These companies benefit from higher interest rates. Healthcare Healthcare includes anything related to hospital management, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. This sector can be both a growth play and a defensive play. The growth comes from new drugs and devices while the defensive side is because people always need healthcare. Industrials Industrial companies are the backbone of manufacturing. The sector includes construction, aerospace, machinery and the defense industry. Materials The materials sector includes industries focused on developing, discovering and selling raw materials such as chemicals, and mining or forestry related companies. This group is very vulnerable to economic downturns and can be the first to recover when the economy recovers. Real Estate The real estate sector is comprised of retail, commercial and residential real estate firms, who make most of their income from rents and the appreciation of real estate values. The sector is sensitive to interest rates and does better when rates are falling. Technology The technology sector is both software and computer hardware developers, manufacturers, and information technology firms. These firms depend on economic growth and their own product cycles. Telecom Telecom comprises mobile telecom providers, internet service providers, satellite and cable companies. Income in this sector is primarily from recurring subscriptions, which should keep earnings fairly stable, although some subsets of the telecom industry are facing massive changes. Utilities Utilities are the businesses that provide consumers with electricity, water and gas. Revenue is consistent and the sector typically pays higher than average dividends.
  24. Currency has an attractive position in investor portfolios according to researchers, primarily due to the diversification provided by holding currencies, which have different characteristics from other assets. Despite that, until recently very few investors held currencies or participated in forex markets. The forex market differs from other traditional asset classes, with many unique characteristics that sometimes surprise those new to financial markets. One of the characteristics is that the forex markets operate 24-hours a day, five-and-a-half days a week around the globe. A second is that currency trades through options, swaps, forwards, futures, and spot transactions. The forex market also differs from other asset classes because it is not a single regulated exchange. There is no central location or control over the forex market, and there are no clearing houses guaranteeing trades. All participants trade with each other based on credit agreements and if a dispute arises there is no arbitration panel. In essence the world’s largest financial market, which trades over $5 trillion daily, is regulated by little more than the trust of its participants. And those participants are very diverse. They include banks and central banks, hedge funds and investment managers, corporations and individual investors. With all these different groups coming together the forex market is extremely liquid with a global reach that impacts businesses and governments around the world. The forex market influences corporate earnings, inflation rates and even a country’s GDP. There’s a reason for the size and scope of the forex markets. Anyone from an individual to a global central bank can speculate and profit from currency fluctuations. Each uses different strategies based on their focus and reason for being involved in the forex market. And those reasons are as varied as the number of traders in the forex market. Many speculative trades are purely for profit, but they make up less than half of all forex trade volume. Central banks can significantly impact forex markets through their monetary policy, but they also buy and sell currencies as part of that policy. Corporations also have a strong involvement in the forex market, buying and selling currency to fund their global operations and to hedge against global risks.
  25. There’s a single thing that is the most difficult part of forex trading for every trader. No, it isn’t your strategy or indicators or money management. The most difficult part of forex trading is mastering yourself. Each trader needs to understand their own personality. They need to know their own strengths and weaknesses so they can choose the proper trading strategy and their approach to the market. Otherwise they’ll be fighting themselves on every trade and decision. The trader is always the weak link in the trading equation, so it makes sense to understand and support this weak link as much as possible. A personal assessment Take the time to sit down and make a list of all your strengths. Then list all your weaknesses. Once that’s complete go over each characteristic and determine how they might affect your trading decisions and actions. Once you’ve completed the assessment show it to someone who knows you well and ask them if they believe it is accurate and if there’s anything you may have missed. Others can be very perceptive in noticing subtle personality traits we may miss ourselves. Develop patience Most individuals aren’t as patient as they believe they are, but even if you’re the most patient person, forex trading will mean you need even more. For new traders it is almost impossible to distinguish between setups that are perfect and those that are almost perfect, but slightly flawed. As soon as they see most of their trade criteria met, they jump right into the trade without waiting for meeting all the criteria, which can often lead to failed trades. Finally, every successful forex trader either came to the market with, or quickly developed, discipline. To remain true to your strategy and trade rules you will be constantly testing and building your discipline. If you have any doubts about a trade stay on the sidelines. Making money in forex is far harder than losing it. Remember, there will always be more trading opportunities and trade setups if you have the patience to wait for them.
