The approval of Novartis AG’s (SWX: NOVN) gene therapy drug that costs $2.1 million set a new standard in terms of cost for gene therapy medications and made headlines across the globe.

However, the drug achieved another milestone in that it is the first time that a drug can treat a complicated illness using a single dosage at such a high cost.

While the drug’s cost is quite prohibitive, it treats a disease that most other drugs simply manage and treat over a long period of time. This is first in the industry, which is probably why the drug costs millions, but it is my hope that over time other drugs may enter the market at a friendlier price point.

There is a lot of research being done on the CRISPR gene editing technology, which could drastically revolutionize the medical industry, but the technology is yet to pass clinical trials.

However, while most people wait for the CRISPR technology to become available on a large scale and at a cheaper price, many infants affected by spinal muscular atrophy may have no option but to use the world’s most expensive treatment.
