About Marvell Technology

Marvell designs semiconductors that move, store and process data, from the core of the data centre out to the network edge. Its chips are built as systems on a chip, combining analogue, mixed-signal and digital signal processing functions. Customers are mainly in data centres and communications, and it sells both directly and through distributors.

The product range covers ethernet controllers, adapters, transceivers and switches, custom application-specific chips, and interconnect parts such as optical digital signal processors, laser drivers, silicon photonics and co-packaged optics. It also makes fibre channel adapters, storage controllers for hard disk and solid-state drives, and host interface products. The business dates from 1995.

Our Analysis

Marvell Technology stock (NASDAQ: MRVL) has had a difficult first half of 2025, down more than 30% on the period. Zooming out however, and the picture takes a different shape.

Over the past year, the company has been a subject of intense investor scrutiny, marked by periods of optimism fueled by its AI-centric growth prospects and moments of concern stemming from broader economic headwinds and competitive pressures. Marvell’s journey is a compelling case study of a semiconductor company adapting to the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Marvell’s projection of approximately $2 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2025, exceeding Wall Street estimates, reflects the strong demand for its custom AI chips. The data center segment, contributing 76% of total revenue, is the primary growth engine. This bullish outlook has been a positive signal to investors, indicating the potential for sustained growth in the AI domain.

The strategic decision to sell its automotive ethernet division to Infineon Technologies for $2.5 billion in cash demonstrates Marvell’s commitment to concentrating on its core AI and custom silicon solutions. This move allows the company to streamline its operations and allocate resources to higher-growth areas. The divestiture, expected to close within the year, will provide Marvell with additional capital to fuel its AI initiatives.

Our View: You would be wise to consider the views of the analyst community in conjunction with the fundamentals surrounding the company to properly determine a value for the stock that you feel is appropriate.

At the upper end of analysts estimates it would be easy to get carried away with the potential gains on show, but the flipside is that these targets can shift within the blink of an eye and that the view of analysts is very dynamic.

If you are considering swing trading, or day trading Marvell Technology shares that is a separate consideration, but for those planning for the long haul, fundamental analysis is king.

Marvell Technology – The Basics Driving The Business

Marvell, traditionally known for its expertise in data storage, networking, and connectivity solutions, has been proactively reshaping its portfolio to capitalize on the exponential growth of AI. The company’s strategic pivot involves focusing on custom AI chips for data centers, a segment that is rapidly becoming a significant revenue driver. This strategic direction is underscored by recent financial forecasts and corporate decisions.

The company’s core business revolves around designing, developing, and marketing a broad range of integrated circuits. These chips are integral components in various applications, including data centers, enterprise networking, automotive, and consumer electronics. Marvell’s strength lies in its ability to provide customized solutions tailored to specific customer needs, particularly in high-performance computing and networking infrastructure.
