Melrose Industries Shares Rise After GKN Aerospace Garden Grove Update

Shares in Melrose Industries (LON: MRO) climbed on Tuesday, up around 2.6% to 474p, after the aerospace and automotive group provided an update on the incident at its GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California.

In a statement, Melrose announced three key developments. First, it will launch a claims programme of up to $100 million to compensate eligible residents and businesses affected by the May evacuation order, covering costs such as hotel stays, meals, transportation, lost wages and loss of use. The scheme is expected to go live in the coming weeks and remain open into 2027.

Second, and perhaps most significantly for investors, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has closed its criminal investigation into the incident and confirmed it will not pursue any criminal charges — removing a key overhang on the stock.

Third, GKN Aerospace is now targeting 28 September 2026 to resume full manufacturing operations at the site, having permanently decommissioned the tank involved in the incident and invested in additional safety measures. A phased ramp-up to full capacity and customer deliveries is expected during the fourth quarter.

Melrose noted that claims from emergency services and potential civil enforcement penalties will be handled separately from the compensation programme, and that its insurance position in relation to the incident remains under review.

The market’s positive reaction reflects relief that legal risk has diminished and that a firm restart date has been set, reducing uncertainty around disruption to GKN Aerospace’s production and deliveries following the incident earlier this year.
