AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) has announced the strategic acquisition of global S-Band spectrum priority rights, a move that promises to bolster its global connectivity ambitions.

The ASTS stock price is currently trading up 2%, as the rally which has led to more than 140% in gains since the turn of 2025 continues to have legs.

The company announced an agreement to acquire an entity holding key S-Band International Telecommunication Union (ITU) priority rights for Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) frequencies in the 1980-2010 MHz and 2170-2200 MHz ranges. The $64.5 million transaction, payable in stock or cash at AST SpaceMobile’s discretion, includes $26 million at closing and $38.5 million in deferred consideration tied to performance-based milestones.

The deal, expected to close in the second half of 2025, is contingent on customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. This acquisition provides AST SpaceMobile a clear pathway to offering services in these spectrum bands globally, complementing its existing 3GPP cellular spectrum strategy.

The S-Band spectrum acquisition is not the only catalyst driving investor interest. In June, AST SpaceMobile announced a strategic partnership with Vodafone to extend connectivity services to underserved regions in India. This collaboration, leveraging AST SpaceMobile's satellite technology, aims to provide space-based cellular broadband services to a vast new customer base. Such partnerships are crucial for AST SpaceMobile as it seeks to monetize its technology and expand its global footprint.

Looking ahead, the company is scheduled to report earnings after market close on Monday, August 11, 2025. The consensus analyst estimate for earnings per share (EPS) is -$0.08, a big narrowing on the $0.51 loss in the same period last year.

The acquisition, if successfully closed, could be an important development for the company’s long-term global coverage ambitions. Markets will now likely look to digest the implications of the S-Band spectrum deal, as well as what might be to come as far as outlook in the upcoming earnings print.
