Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI), a prominent player in the burgeoning quantum computing arena, is poised to release its second-quarter financial results today, after market close.

Analysts expect Rigetti Computing to report an EPS loss of $0.04, which would mark an improvement from the $0.09 loss in the same period last year, suggesting narrowing losses as the company manages costs more efficiently. Revenue is projected to narrow to $1.87 million, down 39.3% year-over-year from $3.09 million, yet the levels are so low that this is more likely to be a story about the outlook than the here and now.

The current forecast for FY26 is for a sales growth rate of 164%, although that will only bring revenue to $22.94million on the year. This is clearly a company that is in the R&D/investment phase, and as we have seen from other names to report yesterday, the guide and messaging regarding execution to expected timelines is likely to hold sway over the stock off the back of the report.

With RGTI's stock having gained 1,750% over the past 12 months, there has been plenty of growth expectations factored in, and markets are holding their breath for insights into the company's progress in a field promising revolutionary advancements, but fraught with challenges. The company will host a conference call at 5:00 p.m. ET to discuss these results and provide updates on its business operations.

The fundamental challenges for now lie in translating theoretical breakthroughs into tangible, real-world applications. While Rigetti has made progress in increasing qubit counts and improving gate fidelity, these advancements do not necessarily translate into a commercially viable quantum computer.

Moreover, whilst the sector is potentially a disruptor that could add value across many industry's, the infrastructure required to support quantum computing is still in its infancy.

Beyond the earnings report itself, Rigetti's long-term success will depend on its ability to continue innovating, securing government contracts, or partnerships, and the sentiment that surrounds the sector. As the view on quantum becomes more bullish, the number of eyes on the reports will only increase. For now, this continues to be a play on the future, but one which could be approaching faster than many foresee.

Looking to the options market for clues, volatility is expected to be high, with a move ~13% in RGTI.
