Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management stated in a note this week that it sees an expanding investment opportunity in artificial intelligence beyond the handful of megacap names that have driven equity gains in recent years, even as the US economy navigates a narrowing growth backdrop.
Chief Investment Officer Brent Schutte said the firm “continue[s] to see an expanding set of companies, both large and small, that benefit not only from enabling the build-out of AI but also from using it to increase the productivity and profitability of their workers.”
The view reinforces the firm’s constructive but selective stance on U.S. equities.

The S&P 500 is at record highs, with investors looking past elevated energy prices and focusing on resilient first-quarter GDP growth of 2%, strong earnings, and only modest moves higher in interest rates.
However, Northwestern Mutual cautioned that the headline strength masks a more concentrated picture.
AI-adjacent investment categories, roughly 13% of the economy, accounted for 1.53 percentage points of the 2% overall Q1 growth, the firm noted.
Schutte said the economy is “resilient but operating with a narrower margin for error,” with consumer spending slowing and the personal saving rate falling to 3.6% in March, a level the firm said has rarely been seen outside of crisis periods.
On inflation, Northwestern Mutual flagged that core prices remain sticky, complicating the Federal Reserve’s path toward rate cuts and adding uncertainty to the macro backdrop.
