WSJ: DoorDash in Advanced Talks to Buy Instacart

The Wall Street Journal reports that DoorDash is in advanced talks to buy grocery-delivery rival Instacart, with a deal possible this week. DoorDash shares fell and Instacart's rose in US trading today.

DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH) is in advanced talks to acquire Instacart (NASDAQ: CART), the Wall Street Journal reported today. DoorDash runs a food-delivery platform, and Instacart is a grocery-delivery company. The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, said a deal could come as soon as this week, though the talks could still fall apart.

Neither company has confirmed the report. Instacart declined to comment on Friday.

By 7.31pm UK time, 3.31pm in New York, Instacart shares were at $58.36, up 3.39% on Friday’s close of $56.44. DoorDash was at $171.93, down 4.15% from its $179.38 close. Both are intraday quotes, with the US session still open.

Today’s moves extend Friday’s. Instacart closed up 9.2% at $56.44, from $51.68 on Thursday, after The Information and Bloomberg reported it was exploring a sale. DoorDash closed down 3.5%, from $185.94 to $179.38. Friday’s moves followed reports that Instacart had held preliminary talks with DoorDash and Uber.

No price, premium or cash-and-stock structure has been reported, so the value DoorDash might pay is unknown.

Regulation is the obvious hurdle. The overlap between food and grocery delivery could invite antitrust scrutiny. DoorDash’s 2021 talks with Instacart, reportedly at a $40bn to $50bn valuation, collapsed partly over regulatory concerns.

Bloomberg reported on Friday that Uber had walked away from talks to buy Instacart, though that is Bloomberg’s report and not confirmed by the companies.

No terms have been reported and the talks could still collapse. London has closed, so tomorrow is the first session in UK hours since the report.

Instacart reports third-quarter results on the 5th of November, after the US close.
