JD Sports Names Ex-IKEA Chief Peter Agnefjäll as Permanent Chair

JD Sports Fashion (LON:JD), the sportswear and trainers retailer, has appointed Peter Agnefjäll, former IKEA chief executive, as permanent Chair effective 1 September. He succeeds Darren Shapland, interim Chair since the AGM on 21 July, who stays on the board as an Independent Director.

JD Sports shares traded at 93.64p this morning, up 0.15% from Thursday’s close of 93.5p, a move too small to read as a market verdict on the appointment itself.

The appointment follows an external search led by Senior Independent Director Kath Smith after Andrew Higginson’s unexpected departure in April, roughly four years into the role. Agnefjäll was President and CEO of IKEA Group from 2013 to 2017, when revenues grew to €36 billion alongside new market entry and an e-commerce push. He later chaired supermarket group Ahold Delhaize from 2021 to 2025 and currently sits on the board of advertising group WPP.

That profile speaks directly to JD’s own stated priorities of global expansion, e-commerce and cost discipline. The appointment does not alter FY27 trading guidance, but it closes a governance gap that had sat open since the spring.

Agnefjäll said: “JD has built a powerful global position in sports and sport-inspired fashion, with a unique connection to its core customer, strong brand partnerships, carefully curated and vibrant stores, and a clear, defined omni-channel strategy.”
