TransUnion Shares Jump Over 10% From Near 52-Week Low

TransUnion shares jumped 10.7% on Thursday to $74.12 on heavy volume, rebounding from a 52-week low set earlier this month. Rivals Equifax and Fair Isaac also rose sharply, but no reason for the move has been established.

TransUnion (NYSE: TRU), the Chicago-based consumer credit reporting and data analytics group, closed 10.7% higher today. The jump came on heavier-than-usual trading.

The shares closed at $74.12 on Thursday 15 October, against $66.94 yesterday. They opened at $68.55, ranged between $67.495 and $74.17, and finished near the high. Volume was 4,510,326, about 1.5 times the 20-session average of roughly 3.07m.

The rally follows a steep September slide. The stock fell from an $84.92 close on the 3rd of September to $61.12 on the 30th of September, its lowest close in the period. It touched a 52-week low of $60.96 intraday on the 1st of October. Its highest close in three months was $85.67 on the 28th of August.

From that low, the shares have now recovered about 21.6%. Today’s close is still just below the 50-day average of $75.32 and the 200-day average of $74.59, and well under the analyst consensus target of $90.14.

The move was not confined to TransUnion. Rival Equifax closed up 7.25% at $161.26, and Fair Isaac rose 6.99% to $769.93. That points to a broader move across the group today, though it is a correlation and not an explanation.

No company announcement or confirmed reason for TransUnion’s move has been found, so the cause of the jump remains unclear.

Third-quarter results are scheduled for the 27th of October before the US open. Last time, on the 28th of July, TransUnion reported second-quarter earnings of $1.07 a share against an estimate of $0.99, and the shares rose 8.5% that day, from $77.24 to $83.80.
