Alibaba Slides in Hong Kong After China Flags Platform Quality Risks

Alibaba's Hong Kong shares fell about 6% in early Thursday trading after China's market regulator met nine platforms over quality risks. It announced no penalties, and the wider tech sector was also sold.

Alibaba Group (HKEX: 9988) shares fell about 6% in early Hong Kong trading on Thursday, as China’s market regulator flagged persistent quality and safety risks on e-commerce platforms. Alibaba owns the Taotian shopping platform, one of the nine groups at the meeting.

The Hong Kong line was at 97.1 Hong Kong dollars at about 7:33am UK time, down 6.36% from a previous close of 103.7, with the session still open. The Hang Seng index was down about 2.4% at about 3:30am UK time, according to AFP, so this was a broad China tech sell-off.

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) held a quality symposium, according to its readout as reproduced by Jiemian News. Attendees were JD, Taotian, PDD, Xiaohongshu, Kuaishou, Douyin, Duodian, Vipshop and Dewu.

“quality is the foundation of high-quality development of the platform economy”

SAMR readout, translated from the Chinese

SAMR said platforms must act as “gatekeepers”. It named counterfeits, goods not matching their descriptions and false advertising as risks, and said they persist especially in livestreaming and quick commerce, meaning ultra-fast local delivery of goods.

The statement did not reveal any immediate measures, and it announced no penalties. This is not a crackdown or an investigation. It is a reminder of regulatory attention on the platforms.

In New York yesterday, Alibaba’s US-listed shares (NYSE: BABA) fell 3.87% to $104.41, the lowest close of the 20 July to 21 October period and about 21% below the $132.32 close of the 10th of August. JD fell 3.62% to $25.79 and PDD fell 3.56% to $78.72.

The notice is undated, and the first copy we found was timestamped 12:02pm UK time yesterday, so we cannot say how much of those falls it explains. The Hong Kong drop reflects regulation and the sector rout together, and the two cannot be separated.

Alibaba’s results are expected on the 24th of November.
