Microsoft Faces High Bar at Wednesday Results

Microsoft reports fiscal first-quarter results after the US close on Wednesday, with traders watching Azure cloud growth and the cost of AI spending after a rally that has left the shares near their highs.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) will report fiscal first-quarter 2027 results after the US close on Wednesday, with the call at 21:30 UK time. The software and cloud group will be judged on Azure growth and on whether its heavy AI spending shows up in margins. UK traders will see the reaction in Thursday’s session.

The shares closed at $532.73 today, 3.3% below the 52-week high of $551.15 set on the 13th of October. They are up 36.4% from $390.54 on the 29th of July, the close before the last results, after which they rose 15.5% to $451.10.

Azure, Microsoft’s cloud platform, grew 43% last quarter, and the company guided to about 45% in constant currency, which strips out exchange-rate swings. Consensus is revenue of $90.63bn and earnings of $4.71 a share. Microsoft’s own revenue guide is $89.85bn to $90.95bn, and earnings per share have beaten estimates in each of the last four quarters.

MeasureExpectedLast quarter

Non-GAAP EPS$4.71 consensus$4.74

CapexAbout $50bn guided$41bn

For Azure growth and capital spending, the company’s guide is the benchmark. The capex figures, from the last earnings call, are total spending including finance leases. Cash additions to property and equipment in the results release were $35.8bn, against $17.1bn a year earlier, a different measure.

Line chart of Microsoft's daily closing share price from April to October 2026, rising after the July results
Microsoft shares have climbed about 36% since the last results on the 29th of July, closing within about 3% of the October high going into Wednesday’s report.

Risks include concentration in large OpenAI-related Azure commitments and capacity constraints that run into fiscal 2027. Of 57 analyst ratings, 54 are Buy or Strong Buy, with an average target of $601.73.

After a 36% run, a beat has a high bar to clear. Traders will watch whether Azure holds at or above 45%, whether Copilot’s paid seats keep growing beyond the 30 million reported last quarter, and what management says about capex and margins. UK holders also carry dollar exposure.
