Coinbase Profit Jumps on Crypto Investment Gain

Coinbase reported a 66% jump in third-quarter net income, but almost all of it came from a gain on its crypto investments, while revenue and trading fees fell sharply.

Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN), the US crypto exchange, reported third-quarter net income of $719m yesterday, up 66% from $433m a year earlier. The result, $2.51 a share, was its first profit after three quarterly losses.

Shares closed yesterday at $160.59, down 1.07% from $162.32 and about 29% lower this year. The 52-week low is $139.11. In after-hours trading the stock fell about 2.5% to $156.55 by 9.35pm UK time.

The headline figure flatters the business. Coinbase’s results show about $715m of the profit was a gain on crypto investments, in a quarter when bitcoin rose about 39% to the 30th of September.

Without that gain and its tax effects, adjusted net income was $78m. Almost all of the $719m, in other words, reflects the value of what Coinbase holds rather than what it earned from customers.

The trading business shrank. Revenue fell about 35% to $1.22bn, in line with the $1.2235bn consensus (analysts’ average forecast), and transaction revenue, the fees from customers’ trading, fell 44% to $590m as volatility stayed low. Adjusted EBITDA, operating profit before interest, tax, depreciation and some one-offs, was $333m, down 58% on the year but up 60% on the quarter and ahead of the $286m consensus. Coinbase gave no guidance.

One bright spot was prediction markets, platforms for betting on event outcomes, which passed $200m in annualised revenue. Mizuho analyst Dan Dolev summed up the quarter:

better than feared but crypto remains challenged.

The after-hours drop looks hard to credit to the results alone. Binance reportedly suffered an estimated $6.3bn hack, which also hit bitcoin and other crypto stocks, and Coinbase shares fell sharply in after-market trade.
