Aviva (LON: AV.) shares have been on a strong run through the last 18 months, climbing from lows near 450p to a 52-week high of 740.6p in mid-August — a gain of more than 55%.
Yet the stock now sits just beneath a stubborn technical ceiling around 750p, a level that has capped rallies on several occasions over the insurer’s long trading history.
Chart-watchers will note that Aviva has again approached this zone without a clean breakout. After peaking at 740.6p on 19 August, the stock pulled back sharply to 714p, with volume spiking to nearly 10 million shares — a classic sign of profit-taking at resistance.
The 14-day RSI reached the low 70s in mid-August, an overbought signal that has preceded several short-term retreats throughout the year. A decisive weekly close above 755-760p, ideally on strong volume, would be required to confirm a genuine breakout into uncharted territory for the modern-era stock.
The rally has been fundamentally driven. Aviva’s H1 2026 results showed operating profit up 24% to £1.32bn, a 7% dividend hike to 14p, and continued progress integrating Direct Line, with £100m of cost synergies banked against a £225m target.
General insurance premiums jumped 29% and Wealth AUM rose 25% to £261bn. Broker sentiment has turned increasingly bullish, with Berenberg initiating coverage at Buy with an 800p target and Zacks upgrading to “Buy” on rising earnings estimates.
With fundamentals firm but momentum stretched, 755p remains the key battleground for bulls seeking a historic breakout.
