Axcelis Shares Slide Despite Strong Guidance

Chip-equipment maker Axcelis beat third-quarter estimates and guided well above consensus, yet its shares fell again today, and the cause is not clear.

Axcelis Technologies (NASDAQ: ACLS) shares fell about 9.5% today, even after the ion implantation equipment maker beat third-quarter forecasts and guided fourth-quarter revenue to about $275m. Ion implantation, a key chip-fabrication step, fires dopant ions into wafers to change their electrical properties.

The stock was at $83.37 at about 4:04pm London time, an intraday quote rather than a close, down 9.52% from yesterday’s close of $92.14. It is 44% below its close of $147.77 on the 2nd of October.

The Massachusetts-based company reported before the US open. Third-quarter revenue was $237.8m, up about 11.3% from $213.6m a year earlier. Non-GAAP earnings per share, which exclude items such as share-based pay, were $1.26, against $1.11 expected by three analysts polled by Zacks.

The fourth-quarter guide is the larger surprise. Axcelis expects revenue of about $275m, roughly 15% above the Zacks consensus of $239.25m, and non-GAAP EPS of about $1.50, roughly 22% above the $1.23 consensus.

Management pointed to demand. Russell Low, president and chief executive, said:

We are particularly encouraged by the strong increase in bookings, reflecting a broadening recovery across our end markets, with continued momentum in Memory and increasing activity in Power and General Mature.

Bookings are new customer orders, ahead of revenue. Axcelis gave no bookings figure, but reported record customer service and installed-base revenue, covering spares, upgrades and service.

The results and guidance do not obviously explain today’s fall, and the cause is unclear. Profitability was softer: non-GAAP gross margin was 41.2% against 41.8%, and non-GAAP operating margin 16.6% against 18.2%.

David Ryzhik, senior vice president and interim chief financial officer, said results exceeded expectations despite foreign exchange headwinds on gross margin. Low said Axcelis expects to finish 2026 with positive momentum and further growth in 2027. Axcelis has beaten EPS consensus in each of the last four quarters, per Zacks.
