Everplay’s Wardogs Tops One Million Sales on Steam Early Access Debut

Everplay Group plc (LON: EVPL), the AIM-listed games label behind Worms and Overcooked!, said its new title Wardogs sold more than one million copies on its first day after launching into Steam Early Access yesterday.

EVPL shares closed yesterday’s session at 293p, up from 271p on 4 September, a rise of roughly 8% over the week. The stock sits below its 52-week high of 412.17p but above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages. Today’s announcement was published before the London market opened, so that move predates the news.

Wardogs, a 100-player tactical first-person shooter, was developed by Bulkhead, an independent studio Everplay backs via its stake in Super Media Group, and published by Team17. The title reached more than 340,000 concurrent players on Steam on launch day. Group chief executive Mikkel Weider said: “Selling more than one million copies on day one is a truly fantastic achievement by Bulkhead and Team17. I would like to thank everyone for their tremendous work! I’m really excited about our partnership with Bulkhead and proud to be part of the Wardogs franchise.”

Unlike a sequel to an owned franchise such as Hell Let Loose or Dredge, Wardogs is a wholly new title, offering the market a data point that Everplay’s strategy of backing independent studios can produce hits beyond its established back catalogue. There is no directly comparable prior figure, since the title has no predecessor.

The news lands two trading days before Everplay reports interim results for the six months to 30 June, due Tuesday. That report will show whether the Wardogs launch translates into a tangible boost for the group, after shares had already rallied hard into today’s update.
