Palantir Stock Gains: Beats Estimates, Raises Full-Year Guidance

Palantir reported third-quarter revenue ahead of Wall Street forecasts and raised its full-year outlook, while its shares were slightly higher after hours.

Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) reported third-quarter revenue of $2.313bn after the US close today, 96% above a year earlier and about 6% above the $2.18bn consensus. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.44 against $0.41 expected.

The shares closed the regular session at $178.55, down 3%, and were about 2% higher in after-hours trading. They fell 6.3% on Friday.

Revenue was up 20% on the previous quarter and passed $2bn for the first time. US commercial revenue reached $984m, up 148% on a year earlier, and overtook US government revenue of $953m for the first time. The government business still grew 96%.

Guidance is what sets the report apart from the consensus. Palantir expects fourth-quarter revenue of $2.649bn to $2.653bn, against a consensus of $2.46bn, and lifted its full-year revenue guide to $8.530bn to $8.534bn. Yahoo Finance’s average is $8.22bn, so the new range is about 3.8% above it.

Profitability held up too. Adjusted operating income was $1.427bn, a 62% margin, and net income under US accounting rules was $1.128bn. Palantir said it still expects to report a profit on that basis each quarter.

Chief executive Alex Karp framed the quarter around growth in the US:

Witness our third quarter results: overall revenue soared 96% year-over-year, U.S. commercial revenue grew 148% year-over-year and 29% sequentially, and aggregate U.S. revenue grew 119% year-over-year.

The softer figure is total contract value, the value of deals signed in the quarter. It was $2.918bn, up just 6% on a year earlier and far slower than revenue growth.
