Sosandar Narrows Loss on 11% Sales Growth

Sosandar grew half-year sales and widened its gross margin, trimming its adjusted loss, even as prolonged summer weather hit September and left its own website flat for the half. The fashion retailer says October trading has strengthened significantly.

Sosandar (AIM: SOS), the UK women’s fashion brand, cut its adjusted pre-tax loss to £690k in the six months to 30 September as revenue rose 11% to £20.785m. The company reported the unaudited results at 7am today.

Revenue ran 17% ahead of last year for the first five months to end-August. September was then hit by prolonged summer weather, and sales on its own website were flat for the half.

Third-party channels, which include NEXT, M&S and John Lewis, grew 24% over the half. The company attributes some of that growth to M&S following its cyber-incident. Sosandar held full prices and ran no September promotions.

Co-CEOs Ali Hall and Julie Lavington said the pattern changed once the weather did.

Whilst September was impacted by the prolonged Summer weather, trading has strengthened significantly through October as we saw more Autumnal weather.

Gross margin, the share of sales left after product costs, rose to 65.1% from 62.2%. The company points to channel mix and better intake margins, helped by cost prices and sterling against the dollar. Similar rates are secured for the second half.
