Uber Earnings: Reports Tomorrow With Stock Near Lows

Uber reports third-quarter results tomorrow before the US open, with its shares close to a 52-week low despite strong guidance. Robotaxi fears and deal spending are the questions investors want answered.

Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) reports third-quarter results tomorrow, Wednesday, before the US market opens. The ride-hailing, food delivery and freight group will hold its call at 8 am New York time, or 1 pm in London.

The shares closed at $66.60 today, down 0.16%. That is about 4% above the 52-week low of $64.04 and about a third below the 52-week high of $100.35, even though gross bookings, the total value of rides and orders, grew 22% in the second quarter.

Company guidance, per Yahoo Finance, sets the bar. Uber pointed to third-quarter gross bookings of $58.25bn to $60.25bn and adjusted EBITDA, its own measure of operating profit, of $2.86bn to $2.96bn. Bloomberg consensus sits in the upper half of both ranges.

Adjusted EBITDA$2.86bn to $2.96bn$2.93bn
RevenueNo data$14.65bn

The EBITDA consensus is up 30% from $2.26bn a year ago, and the bookings consensus is up 20%.

The swing factor is robotaxis, meaning driverless ride-hailing. Uber has targeted autonomous operations in 15 cities by year-end, and shareholder Pershing Square said in its latest investor letter:

Investor concerns regarding the potential long-term impact of autonomous vehicles (AVs) continue to negatively weigh on Uber’s share price, which is increasingly disconnected from its strong business performance.

Spending is the other question. Uber launched a $14.8bn offer for Delivery Hero in July and agreed to buy ezCater for $2.3bn in October. Management has said it plans to rebuild share buybacks after the Q2 deal outlay.
