Why Vicor Stock Just Surged

Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ: VICR) shares jumped roughly 10% in postmarket trading on Monday, after the power-electronics company sharply raised its third-quarter revenue guidance, citing licensing royalties tied to its Vertical Power Delivery (VPD) technology.

In a release issued Monday afternoon, Vicor said it now expects Q3 sequential revenue growth of more than 20%, up from its prior guidance of nearly 10%. The company attributed the upgrade to royalties from a recently announced non-exclusive VPD license.

CEO Patrizio Vinciarelli said four leading OEMs and hyperscalers have now secured licenses to power system technology he said Vicor pioneered and patented. According to Vinciarelli, some unlicensed hyperscalers approached the company after their computing systems faced import bans tied to infringing power modules, and after recognizing that systems using VPD could face similar restrictions. He noted that because the first VPD patent was only recently asserted, companies can still obtain licenses at a low royalty rate before further escalation.

Vinciarelli added that suppliers selling power modules to licensed customers support a healthier multi-source supply chain, while companies that “copy innovators and disregard their patent rights” risk supply disruption, monetary damages, and potential exclusion from the market.

The guidance raise signals that Vicor’s patent-licensing strategy around VPD is beginning to translate into tangible revenue, beyond the company’s core power-module business. Investors reacted swiftly to the improved outlook, sending shares sharply higher after the market close.

Vicor did not specify the dollar value of the royalty contribution or name the licensees in Monday’s release.
