AppLovin Shares Plunge Over 20% After Hours as Q2 Results Disappoint

AppLovin Corporation (NASDAQ: APP) shares have cratered more than 20% in after-hours trading Wednesday, August 5, after the mobile advertising technology company posted second-quarter results that fell short of Wall Street’s lofty expectations and offered a guidance outlook that underwhelmed investors.

The Palo Alto-based ad-tech firm reported second-quarter revenue of $1.924 billion, narrowly missing analyst estimates of roughly $1.935 billion, even as sales surged 52.8% year-over-year. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $3.76, essentially in line with consensus estimates of $3.67, but the top-line miss overshadowed the bottom-line performance.

Compounding investor unease, AppLovin’s forward guidance failed to inspire confidence. The company forecast third-quarter revenue between $2.055 billion and $2.085 billion, versus analyst expectations of about $2.068 billion — a roughly 0.6% shortfall at the midpoint.

Adjusted EBITDA guidance of $1.71 billion to $1.74 billion also failed to reassure a market accustomed to AppLovin consistently beating and raising forecasts.

The stock, which had been one of the market’s hottest momentum names, traded down as much as 21% immediately following the release, sinking to around $331.57 in after-hours action.

Despite the sharp pullback, AppLovin’s underlying business metrics remained robust. The company generated $869 million in operating cash flow and $863.3 million in free cash flow during the quarter, while repurchasing $551.3 million of its own stock. It ended the period with approximately $3.05 billion in cash and cash equivalents.

AppLovin has been a favorite among growth investors thanks to its AI-powered AXON advertising engine and expanding e-commerce ad business.

However, Wednesday’s reaction underscores how richly valued, high-momentum stocks can face outsized punishment even for modest misses, as investors reassess whether the company’s blistering growth trajectory is beginning to moderate.
