AMD Stock Slides After Q2 Earnings Fail to Impress – Here Are the Key Price Levels to Watch

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) stock has tumbled sharply on Wednesday, falling as much as 6.6% to trade around $484.50, after the chipmaker’s second-quarter results — while technically beating estimates — failed to live up to the lofty expectations built into the stock following its recent AI-driven rally.

AMD reported adjusted earnings of $1.66 per share on revenue of $11.54 billion for the June quarter, edging past analyst estimates of $1.62 per share. Data center sales, a key growth driver tied to AMD’s AI chip ambitions, reportedly doubled year-over-year.

On paper, the numbers were solid. But investors and analysts were looking for a more decisive signal that AMD is closing the gap with rival Nvidia in the booming AI accelerator market, and the muted margin outlook left many unconvinced.

Adding to the pressure, reports that Elon Musk has committed to using Nvidia chips for SpaceX further rattled sentiment, reinforcing concerns that AMD remains firmly in second place in the AI hardware race despite years of investment and a string of new product launches.

Analysts at MarketWatch and Barron’s pointed to three recurring themes behind the selloff: underwhelming margin guidance, elevated investor expectations following AMD’s blistering 2025-2026 run-up, and lingering doubts about the company’s ability to meaningfully steal AI market share from Nvidia in the near term.

Key Price Levels to Watch

AMD stock opened Wednesday’s session sharply lower, gapping down from Tuesday’s close of $518.58 to open near $484.50. Shares swung between an intraday high of $502.00 and a low of $478.20 before settling around $484.50, down roughly 6.6% on the day.

  • Resistance at $502.00: Wednesday’s intraday high now marks a near-term ceiling. A reclaim of this level on strong volume would be an early sign that buyers are stepping back in after the post-earnings shakeout.
  • Gap zone $484.50–$502.00: The gap left by Wednesday’s plunge from the prior close sits in this range. Traders will watch whether AMD can fill any part of this gap in the sessions ahead, or whether it acts as fresh overhead supply.
  • Support at $478.20: This is Wednesday’s session low and the first key downside level. A break below here would open the door to further downside as momentum traders and stop-losses could accelerate selling.
  • Prior close at $518.58: This level, where AMD traded before the earnings reaction, is now a longer-term resistance marker that would need to be reclaimed to fully repair the technical damage from the selloff.

With AMD shares down nearly 7% in a single session, traders will be watching closely to see whether the stock stabilizes above the $478 support zone or extends losses as the market continues to digest the earnings reaction and AMD’s positioning relative to Nvidia in the AI chip race.

The pullback marks one of AMD’s steepest single-day declines this year and highlights how sensitive high-flying AI stocks have become to any hint of disappointment, even when headline numbers technically beat Wall Street’s targets.
