CMA Launches Investigation into Trainline Over Booking Fee Transparency

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened a formal investigation into Trainline over concerns that mandatory fees for train and coach tickets were not fully included in the upfront prices shown to customers, the regulator announced on 19 August 2026.

The probe, launched under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, forms part of a wider CMA crackdown on “drip pricing” — a practice where mandatory charges are separated from headline prices or added later in the booking process.

The CMA said it had observed transactions on Trainline’s app and website with fees ranging from £0.59 to £2.79 for train travel and a £1.50 booking fee for coach bookings.

Trainline was one of three companies named alongside Virgin Atlantic and RED Driving School, all of which had previously received advisory letters warning them about their pricing practices before today’s formal enforcement action.

Responding to the announcement, Trainline said it had “proactively engaged with the CMA over several months” and was “taking steps to enhance the presentation of certain fees.”

The company, which describes itself as Europe’s leading independent rail travel platform, pointed to its 4.9-star app rating as evidence of a transparent customer experience and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.

News of the investigation could weigh on Trainline’s share price in early trading, as regulatory scrutiny often unsettles investors even before any wrongdoing is confirmed.

The potential exposure to fines of up to 10% of global turnover, alongside possible customer compensation costs, may prompt some to reassess near-term earnings risk, though the impact could prove short-lived if the market judges the eventual penalty — if any — to be manageable.

The CMA’s initial evidence-gathering phase is expected to run until January 2027, with no findings yet made against Trainline. Should the regulator conclude that consumer law has been breached, it has powers to order compensation for affected customers and impose fines of up to 10% of global turnover.

The CMA has already secured over £1.95 million in refunds and £6.2 million in fines under similar cases this year.
