Admiral Group Shares Rise As Insurer Beats Expectations Despite Profit Slide

The Admiral Group (LON: ADM) share price has risen over 3% on Thursday morning, up around 80p to 3,786p, after the motor insurer’s half-year results showed resilience despite a sharp fall in profits, with investors apparently reassured by strong customer growth and continued shareholder returns.

The FTSE 100 insurer reported group pre-tax profit of £429.2 million for H1 2026, down 18% from a record £521.0 million a year earlier, as UK Motor earnings fell following rate cuts made through 2025.

Earnings per share dropped 18% to 109.0p, while the interim dividend was cut 39% to 70.5p per share, reflecting a lower payout base and increased use of share buybacks. Admiral also announced a £45 million share buyback.

Despite the profit decline, Admiral grew its customer base to more than 12 million group risks, up 5%, with strength outside UK Motor. European Insurance swung to a £17.2 million profit from a small loss last year, while Admiral Money grew loan balances 39% to £1.88 billion. The group’s solvency ratio remained robust at 190%.

Chief Executive Milena Mondini de Focatiis said the group delivered “good results” against “more challenging market conditions,” highlighting continued profitable growth across European insurance and Admiral Money, plus progress integrating recently-acquired Flock.

She also pointed to a 27% rise in Admiral’s EV insurance book and ongoing investment in AI-driven customer service tools.

Analysts had broadly expected softer UK Motor earnings following the sector-wide pricing cycle, and Admiral’s ability to maintain double-digit returns and strong solvency appears to have reassured the market that the group remains on track for its longer-term growth ambitions.
