AMD Shares Fall Sharply, Sliding Off Session Highs
Advanced Micro Devices shares fell sharply in trading today, dropping over 5% to near $597 after touching a session high of $629.75, with rising bond yields and high oil prices weighing on tech growth stocks earlier in the session.
Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD), the semiconductor maker, fell 5.34% in trading today, changing hands at $596.98 by 3:59pm in London. The stock swung sharply during the session, trading as high as $629.75 before dropping to a low of $596.07, and it was sitting near the bottom of that range as the afternoon wore on.
The move erased more than $33 a share from the session’s high, a sharp reversal for a stock with a market value of around $1.03 trillion. Trading volume of 8,897,900 shares ran well below the stock’s 20-day average of 21,558,529, so the decline came on lighter turnover than usual for the chipmaker rather than on a heavy wave of selling pushing the price down.

How Unusual This Is
A drop of this size on volume well under half the recent average is an unusual pairing: sharp AMD moves typically come with heavier trading than this, not lighter. There is no prior session on record showing a comparable move for the stock, so today’s decline stands as an isolated event in its recent trading history rather than part of an established pattern of large swings.

What Was Behind It
AMD shares were reported down nearly 3% in premarket trading as rising Treasury yields and high oil prices weighed on tech growth stocks. That premarket figure is smaller than the stock’s full intraday decline, so it points to only part of the fall rather than a full, confirmed explanation for the session’s move.
AMD is next due to report results on 3 November, the next scheduled point at which the market will get fresh detail on the company’s performance.
