Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU) is planning to launch an artificial intelligence chatbot service in March, according to Reuters on Monday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The chatbot service, similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT, is set to launch as a standalone application and gradually be merged into Baidu's search engine, sources told Reuters.

The report explains that chatbots in China are currently focused on social interaction, whereas ChatGPT is better at professional tasks. Baidu is planning to include its chatbot-generated results in user search requests.
Baidu's Nasdaq-listed shares have started in 2023 positively, up almost 17% so far. However, it has outperformed in the last three months, rising over 75%.
Following the launch of ChatGPT, interest in AI chatbots surged, with the platform attracting one million users in under a week.
Last week, ChatGPT creator OpenAI reported that Microsoft had made a multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment in the company as part of an extended partnership which follows Microsoft’s previous investments in the company from 2019 and 2021. The move is expected to drive wider adoption of ChatGPT.
In addition, BuzzFeed shares skyrocketed last week on news of a deal with Meta Platforms and the plan to use ChatGPT to personalize and enhance the firm's online quizzes and content.
