BP shares edged up on Wednesday after the oil major confirmed Ian Tyler as its permanent Chair, ending months of speculation over the top boardroom role. Shares in the FTSE 100 group rose around 0.4% to roughly 543.6p in early trading, adding to a modest premium after opening near 545.5p.
Tyler, who joined BP’s board as a non-executive director in April 2025 and stepped into the Interim Chair role in May 2026, takes over with immediate effect following what BP described as an “extensive search process” spanning internal and external candidates. He brings decades of non-executive experience across oil and gas, natural resources and engineering, having chaired Grafton Group and Cairn Energy, and served as Senior Independent Director at Anglo American and a non-executive at BAE Systems.
Senior Independent Director Dame Amanda Blanc said the board had “unanimously” backed Tyler, citing his judgement and the confidence he had already built with management, including new chief executive Meg O’Neill, during his interim tenure. Tyler pledged to lead the “board’s evolution” and commit to more transparent shareholder engagement while backing the leadership team’s delivery of performance.
In a related announcement, Blanc revealed she will not seek re-election at BP’s 2027 AGM and will step down once a successor as Senior Independent Director is found, closing a four-year board tenure that included overseeing the chair search.
The appointment removes a lingering governance uncertainty for BP investors, who have been watching closely as the company works through its turnaround strategy under O’Neill. Confirmation of settled leadership at both chair and chief executive level appears to have been modestly welcomed by the market.
