FTSE 100 Watchlist: 3 Stocks Poised for Breakout Moves Next Week

Defence and pharma names dominate the FTSE 100’s technical picture heading into next week, with three stocks showing setups worth watching.

BAE Systems has been the standout momentum story of the summer, rallying from around 1,880p in early July to a peak of 2,270p on 12 August — a 20%+ surge fuelled by record order backlogs and fresh US Navy contract wins.

Shares have since cooled to roughly 2,126p, a near-6% pullback from the highs. Traders will watch whether support holds around the 2,100–2,120p zone; a bounce here would set up another run at the 2,270p ceiling, while a break lower risks a deeper retracement after such a steep advance.

Rolls-Royce makes the list once again and remains in consolidation just below its all-time highs after a blistering run from roughly 1,450p to nearly 1,586p in early August. Shares last closed near 1,502p, but sentiment got a major lift when Citigroup hiked its price target by 50%, to 1,647p, citing materially upgraded long-term profit and cash-flow forecasts.

With shares holding above the 1,480–1,500p support band, a decisive push through 1,565–1,585p could open the door to a fresh breakout toward the 1,600p-plus levels some analysts now flag as achievable.

AstraZeneca looks the most interesting technical turnaround candidate. After sliding from July highs near 13,350p to an August low of 11,424p, shares have rebounded roughly 7% to close near 12,240p, helped by strong Phase III oncology trial data and swirling M&A speculation around a potential mega-deal with Bristol Myers Squibb.

A sustained move above 12,700p would confirm the recovery is more than a dead-cat bounce and put the stock back in range of its summer highs.

All three warrant close attention as volume and volatility build into next week’s session.
