Weir Group Price Target Trimmed by Jefferies Despite Bullish Stance on Shares

Jefferies has trimmed its price target on Weir Group to 3,515p from 3,555p, though the broker maintained its Buy rating on the FTSE 100 mining equipment maker, according to a note published earlier this week.

Analyst Andy Douglas said Weir’s first-half results “hit all the right notes,” suggesting the modest reduction reflects fine-tuning of estimates rather than any loss of conviction in the investment case. The revised target still implies substantial upside from current trading levels, underscoring Jefferies’ continued confidence in the Glasgow-based group’s growth trajectory.

Weir shares have been volatile in recent weeks. The stock opened August around 2,632p before drifting lower through the first half of the month, touching a low near 2,410p on 18 August.

Shares rebounded sharply the following day, on 19 August — the day of the Jefferies note — climbing from a session low of 2,418p to close at 2,458p, a gain of roughly 1.7% versus the prior close of 2,416p. The stock has continued to firm since, trading above 2,480p in the days following the update.

Weir Group, a supplier of engineering equipment and aftermarket services to the mining sector, has benefited from resilient demand for mining consumables and continued momentum in its aftermarket revenue streams. Jefferies’ commentary suggests the first-half print reinforced the thesis that Weir’s margin expansion and cash generation remain on track, even as the headline target was nudged slightly lower.

With a Buy rating reaffirmed, Jefferies’ move signals that despite near-term share price choppiness, the broker sees Weir’s fundamentals — and its valuation upside — as intact heading into the second half of the year.
