Inchcape Sinks 9% on Australia Margin Cut

Inchcape has cut its 2026 operating margin guidance because of a weak performance in Australia, and Deutsche Bank has since lowered its price target. The shares sit well below their moving averages.

Inchcape (LSE: INCH) cut its 2026 operating margin guidance to about 5.5% from about 6% yesterday, and its shares fell 9.3%. The automotive distributor, which sells and services cars for brand partners, pointed to Australia. Operating margin is operating profit as a share of revenue.

The shares closed yesterday at 626p, down from 690p, after touching an intraday low of 604.5p, a 52-week low, on 2.16m shares traded. Today they were up 1.6% at 636p at 1.41pm, still below the level before the update.

In its third-quarter update, Inchcape said Australian volumes were down 50%. Its key brand partner there lost competitiveness as the market shifted towards NEVs, meaning electric and hybrid cars. Chief executive Duncan Tait described the problem.

Australia remains a challenge – our key brand has underperformed, with deteriorating competitiveness in a rapidly-evolving market.

Group volumes rose 3% in the quarter against industry growth of 9%. Asia-Pacific volumes fell 37% while that market grew 5%, and the Americas rose 10% in a market up 24%. Europe and Africa volumes also grew.

Jefferies, which rates the shares a buy, sees consensus 2026 pre-tax profit forecasts falling by about 8%, while Panmure Liberum, at hold, expects 2026 EBIT estimates, meaning operating profit, to be cut by more than 10%.

At 636p the shares are below Deutsche Bank’s new 750p target. They are also below their 50-day average of 776.6p and 200-day average of 805p.
