JD Sports Interim Results Preview: Focus on North America Slowdown

JD Sports (LON: JD.) reports interim results on Wednesday, the first update since the sportswear retailer cut its annual profit guidance in August, leaving the market to judge whether its North American slowdown has stabilised.

JD Sports (LON: JD.) will release half-year results before markets open this Wednesday, the 23rd of September, its first scheduled update since cutting full-year profit guidance last month. On the 19th and 20th of August, the group lowered its FY27 pre-tax profit range to £700 million to £800 million, from £750 million to £850 million, after North America like-for-like sales fell 6.8%. Shares fell as much as 14% in response.

The stock has kept sliding since, closing at 73.72p on Friday, roughly 30% below its 52-week high of £104.73 and near its 52-week low of 63.32p. Brokers have marked down targets on the back of European and US footwear weakness: RBC Capital Markets cut JD to “sector perform” and trimmed its target to 95p, while UBS holds a neutral rating with an 86p target.

Yahoo Finance’s consensus, which covers only full fiscal years rather than the interim period being reported, expects FY2027 revenue of £12.62 billion, a 0.32% decline on the prior year, before a return to growth in FY2028.

Earnings estimates have seen 14 downward revisions against a single upward one for FY2028 in the past month, suggesting the City had already marked down expectations before Wednesday’s print.

The results will also be watched for signs of strategic progress under new North America chief executive John Mersho and new chair Peter Agnefjäll, as the group continues closing underperforming stores in Germany and its Hibbett banner in the US.

Chief executive Régis Schultz struck a cautious but steady tone after the August warning.

“Whilst we continue to expect muted market growth in FY27, we remain confident in JD Group’s medium-term trajectory, underpinned by our strong brand partnerships and agile, multi-brand model.”

Régis Schultz, CEO, JD Sports
