Meta’s Antitrust Trial Over Instagram and WhatsApp Could Reshape Social Landscape

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), the parent company of Facebook, is facing a significant antitrust trial in Washington. This trial comes as a result of accusations that Meta has created an unlawful monopoly in the social media sector by acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp. The legal action was initiated by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) during Donald Trump’s first term, with the original case being filed in 2020.

The FTC is seeking a ruling that would require Meta to restructure or possibly divest key parts of its business, including Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta’s chief legal officer, Jennifer Newstead, has criticized the FTC’s case as weak and as a potential deterrent to tech investment. She argues that the claims fail to take into account the competitive pressures Meta faces from platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Apple’s messaging app.

Instagram is projected to contribute significantly to Meta’s revenue, accounting for over half of the company’s ad revenues in the United States by 2025.

In contrast, WhatsApp, while being Meta’s largest app in terms of daily users, holds potential in expanding business messaging services. This growth opportunity is another critical aspect as the company continues to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional social media advertising.

The trial, which might alter the landscape of the social media industry, features some high-profile elements. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, is expected to testify, during which he will be questioned about the communications surrounding these pivotal acquisitions. His recent activities, including purchasing a mansion in Washington, D.C., and repeated visits to the White House, have drawn public interest and media attention.

If successful, the FTC must also demonstrate in a subsequent trial that divesting Instagram and WhatsApp would feasibly restore competition within the industry. Currently, Snapchat and MeWe are viewed as Meta’s direct competitors, but the FTC claims that Meta holds a monopoly over platforms used primarily for sharing with friends and family.
