Ford’s F-150 Lightning Can Now Power Your Home, Should You Invest?

Key points:

  • Ford partners with Siemens for the development of a unique charger for the F-150 Lightning
  • Enabling Ford Intelligent Backup Power, the F-150 can interactively power the home
  • This is a first for EV trucks, and another notch in the belt of Ford’s promising EV focus

In the latest announcement from Ford (NYSE: F), the shifting vehicle manufacturer has entered a partnership with Siemens eMobility for the development of the Ford Charge Station Pro – a custom-built EV charger for the Ford F-150 Lightning. If you’ve been in tune with the hysteria of the electric boom, you might well be aware that Ford’s EV pickup has been a particular focus for the latest wave of EV consumers. Hitting the pickup niche hard worked out well for Ford, leaving rival GM trailing worryingly behind.

The Ford Charge Station Pro isn’t quite like the run-of-the-mill EV charger. The infrastructure enables Ford Intelligent Backup Power, which transforms the F-150 Lightning from an ordinary electric pickup to an interactive part of the home. This means the vehicle can provide power generation during outages, with further developments expected to enhance customer interaction with the power grid.

First, of its kind? Definitely for an electric truck. The alluring aspect of Ford won’t be found in new-age concepts or futuristic designs – but in reliability and direction. Why is Ford so investable as an EV company? Through picking the neglected niche of the EV pickup, they’ve already swooped in on market share simply through a lack of comparative competition. It isn’t trying to be anything it’s not, and that’s why the company will continue to flourish.

The F-150 Lightning could prove revolutionary in the mid-size vehicle market; it certainly looks that way so far. Ford stock opened on Wednesday with a gain of 3.5% and is up 52% year-on-year.
