FTSE 100 Technical Analysis: Index Holds Steady as Signals Turn Neutral

The FTSE 100 traded largely flat on Wednesday, last changing hands at 10,743.35, up 15.31 points (+0.14%), after oscillating between an intraday low of 10,701.11 and a high of 10,765.96.

The blue-chip index remains well within its 52-week range of 9,107.40 to 10,989.45, sitting closer to the upper end of that band even as momentum indicators cool.

Technical readings point to a market in consolidation rather than clear trend. The 14-day Relative Strength Index stands at 48.5, squarely in neutral territory and showing neither overbought nor oversold conditions.

The MACD reading of -7.44 leans bearish, hinting at fading short-term momentum, while moving averages are split — the 5-day (10,739.57), 50-day (10,760.70) and 200-day (10,806.66) lines are all generating “sell” signals versus the current price, though the broader moving-average consensus (six buy versus six sell signals across the curve) nets out to an overall neutral daily signal.

The Fibonacci pivot point sits at 10,753.76, just above spot price, marking a key level bulls need to reclaim to shift sentiment more constructively.

September FTSE 100 futures were little changed, up 5.5 points (+0.05%) to 10,767.50, tracking a similarly tight range between 10,726.00 and 10,792.50, reinforcing the sense of a market awaiting a fresh catalyst.

Beneath the surface, sector rotation was evident. Miners led gainers, with Fresnillo (+7.8%), Endeavour Mining (+7.5%), Glencore (+5.2%) and Anglo American (+4.8%) rallying on firmer commodity prices, while defensives and financials lagged — IG Group (-4.8%), Smith & Nephew (-3.8%) and National Grid (-2.6%) among the session’s biggest decliners.

With the index pinned between its moving averages and pivot resistance, traders will watch for a decisive break above 10,790 or below 10,700 to confirm the next directional move.
