Meiji Yasuda May Take 5% Man Group Stake

Japanese insurer Meiji Yasuda plans to raise its commitment to Man Group's investment strategies to JPY 200bn, focused on private credit, and will consider buying about 5% of the fund manager's shares in the open market.

Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company intends to lift its capital commitment to Man Group (LON: EMG) to JPY 200bn, about $1.25bn, over the next three years, Man Group announced today. The money is focused on private credit, meaning lending outside public bond markets, and Meiji Yasuda will also consider buying about 5% of the London-listed asset manager.

Man Group said it would make any purchase in the open market, with no new shares issued. The arrangements include a three-year lock-up from the date of the agreement, a standstill capping any holding at 19.99% of issued share capital, and orderly market arrangements for future disposals, each subject to customary exceptions.

The arrangements can be terminated in certain circumstances, and the financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The deal builds on a partnership announced in February 2025. The two will co-develop products for the Japanese market, Man Group will become a preferred asset management partner, and Meiji Yasuda will gain access to the Oxford-Man Institute for investment advisory services and knowledge sharing on technology.

Robyn Grew, CEO of Man Group, said:

Meiji Yasuda’s increased commitment to our investment strategies underlines our capabilities in private credit and demonstrates our ability to serve large insurance clients globally.
