Admiral Group Downgraded to Hold by Berenberg as Rally Runs Out of Room

Shares in Admiral Group (LON: ADM) fell more than 1% on Thursday after Berenberg downgraded the motor and home insurer to “Hold” from “Buy,” arguing that the stock’s remarkable rally this year has left it fully valued.

The German investment bank cut its rating on Admiral while maintaining its price target at 4,200p, saying the insurer now sits at a fair market price with a “more balanced” risk-reward profile heading into the second half of the year.

Analysts noted that Admiral shares have surged roughly 55% over the past several months, driven by improving underwriting conditions and stronger-than-expected earnings in the UK motor insurance market. Berenberg said much of that good news, including expectations for continued margin improvement, now appears to be reflected in the share price, leaving less room for further upside surprises.

The downgrade comes just weeks after Berenberg had actually raised its price target on Admiral from 3,800p to 4,200p alongside a “Buy” rating, underscoring how quickly sentiment can shift once a stock’s valuation catches up with fundamentals.

Following the note, Admiral shares dropped as much as 50p, or 1.2%, to trade around 4,078p in London on Thursday, pulling back from Wednesday’s close of 4,128p. The stock had touched an intraday high of 4,106p before the Berenberg call weighed on sentiment.

Admiral has been one of the standout performers among UK-listed insurers this year, benefiting from firmer motor premium rates and disciplined claims management. However, Thursday’s downgrade suggests some analysts believe the easy gains have already been captured, with future performance likely to hinge on the company’s upcoming trading updates and the broader trajectory of UK motor insurance pricing.
